Armchair BEA: More Author Interaction

Did anyone notice a pattern from my post earlier this week on author interaction?  I didn't at first, but then it began to stand out like a sore thumb!  Every single author and author event I mentioned featured a male!  I did not include a single female author in my top five favorite events, and I just did not think that was fair at all!  Therefore, I am back today to give you more author love, but this time I am featuring ALL female authors!  Just like last time, a number of these links will take you to my pieces at Walrus Publishing as they were written as freelance pieces.

Susan McBride used to be a local author to me, but sadly I moved away.  However, I had the opportunity to attend several of her events and she is one of THE most down-to-earth, friendliest authors I have ever met.  I even would go so far as to consider her my friend!

Let's be honest ... Jodi Picoult is amazing!  She braves difficult topics and she does it in style.  Then, she went and wrote a book with her daughter, and I loved this.  What a cool mom!  Unfortunately, I cannot find any good photos from this event.  They just did not turn out.

I mentioned my love for Lisa See earlier this week when talking about Beyond the Borders.  It is pretty much guaranteed that I will read anything she writes.  When I had the opportunity to hear her speak, my adoration only grew.  She speaks very honestly and eloquently, and to be honest, I'm a tad bit intrigued by her family history!  (You gotta read the link to see what I mean!)

This name may not stand out to you to begin with.  I know it did not ring a bell for me.  But, her stories you will know ... Skippyjon Jones!  My kids really adore these books, but to get to experience the author actually reading these stories is quite the memorable moment.  She was brilliant!  My kids adored her, but it was when she doodled in their books during her signing that left a lasting impression with them.

Confession:  I have not yet read a single book or story by Catherynne Valente, yet here she is at the top of my list.  WHAT?!?  It is because her author event was so much fun!  It was a smaller, more personal event that featured a musician that writes music to accompany her books.  And, I love music and this is one event that stands out for being unique and awesome and amazing!  Now, I just need to get to her stories and see if they compare to the greatness of her author events.  (P.S. The musician I speak of is S.J. Tucker.  She's fun and creative and I added her station to my Pandora the very next day and still listen to it regularly.)

Now, isn't that better?!?  As I write this, I realize that each and every one of these events can equally compete with all those male author events that I mentioned earlier.  Thank goodness for the power of women writers!!

Who are some of your favorite female authors?  Have you seen any of them in person?  If so, tell me about them!

  1. She has a musician to write music just for her books? Star Power!

(Also, I honestly did not even notice there wasn't a female featured before! What does that say about us??)

  5. I actually did notice that, which is weird because I normally don't pay attention to that sort of thing. People will point out a lack of diversity, and I'll be like, "Oh, yeah, I guess that's true." I guess it was already on my mind this week!

    1. Charleen Lynette ... Well, with one of the daily discussions being on diversity, it probably should have been more on my mind this week!

  6. I've never gotten to meet Susan McBride in person, but she has always been friendly and charming when we've interacted on line, which used to be fairly frequently.

I read lots of female authors, so I tend to go to more female author events. I don't know that any of them stand out in my mind, but I just enjoy going to events period.

  7. It's awesome that you went to an author event for an author whose books you haven't read, and you still enjoyed it so much! I think it speaks well of Valente's fans (& her publicist). Awesome list. :)
