WEEKLY WANDERINGS: Reading & Reading About Writing

Time to do a quick check-in on my reading!  Last time I did this little check-in, I realized that I had my nose between the pages of too many books.  Has this changed much since then?  Nope!  I am still in the midst of way too many books, but that list has decreased a little bit.  Let's take a look . . .

  1. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by JK Rowling:  Still reading this one with my kids.
  2. The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog by Bruce D. Perry:  Still reading this one as a book study for work.
  3. The Complete Sherlock Holmes Volume 1 by Arthur Conan Doyle:  Still dabbling here and there.
  4. The Brothers Grimm 101 Fairy Tales:  Still dabbling here and there.
  5. The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood:  Set this one aside for a bit until I can get a couple of these other ones off this currently reading list.
  6. Fostering Resilient Learners by Kristen Souers:  Another book study for work, but I am almost through this one.
  7. 1984 by George Orwell:  Moved this one back to my nightly reading.
  8. The Light in the Ruins by Chris Bohjalian:  The current audio selection.
  9. Soulless by Gail Carriger:  Had to find an ebook of this after sitting in too many doctors' offices without a book, got hooked, and had to request it again.

Okay, so my list has only decreased by one book since the last time I checked in, but that is still less and I have moved a couple of books out since.

Now, onto another topic ... reading about writing!  Because I am always looking for my next read to add to my ever-growing list of books, I want to hear your recommendations on your favorite books about writing.  I have a handful on my shelf and another handful that I have already read, but I want to add more to my shelf and list of resources.  And, I could use a bit of inspiration and motivation these days.  Writing is getting better again, but there is always room for improvement!  Share your favorites with me.

I wish you the best for the rest of the week!  Happy reading!

What are you currently reading these days?  Do you have any reading about writing recommendations for me?

  1. Favorite books on writing:

"If You Want To Write" by Brenda Ueland. This is the absolute most inspiring book about writing I've ever read--it was so freeing! :)

"Eats, Shoots & Leaves" by Lynn Truss (okay, this one's for punctuation, but I love punctuation and it's funny and helpful).

    1. Deborah O'Carroll ... Thanks for the recommendations! I've heard of the Truss book, but not the other. Off to check them out!

  2. Wow! You have a lot of books going on. I'll recommend a book to add to your crazy list. Anything by Gary Provost.

    1. Jenny ... Too many books probably, but I'm determined to work through them and narrow it down to what my usual used to be ... 3! I'm not familiar with Provost, so now I'm off to check him out.

  3. Yeah, that's too many books. I had to switch up my reading plan recently so only reading a fiction and nonfiction instead of having 20 books out from the library.

    1. Bryan G. Robinson ... I really need to get this back in control. It's been this long list for far too long.

  4. I don't know how you are keeping all those books straight! After years of being a serial book polygamist, I find that my brain can only handle one or two plots at a time these days. No more multiple book reading for me!

I tried to re-read The Handmaid's Tale last year but found it hit way too close to home this time around. I want to get to it again though sometime in the next four years, along with a 1984. It is good to be reminded of potential futures that are no longer so fictional.

    1. Michelle ... I used to only read one book at a time. It eventually moved to three ... a physical book, an audio, and one with my kids. I'm not sure when it got out of control, but it's been going on for at least a year now. Ugh!

Too close to home is right! Some of the parallels are crazy!
