Monday Maunder: Trying to Get in the Holiday Mood

It is the middle of December, and I find myself still trying to get in the holiday mood.  My house is now decorated.  We even have a few lights on the outside of the house.  I am almost done with my Christmas shopping.  I even frequently find myself listening to holiday music.  Yet, I can't yet get excited for the upcoming holidays.  Though I will admit that the 7+ inches of snow that we have received in the last 24 hours is helping, even if I don't like driving in it.

Honestly, the last week has proven to be much more than I had originally expected.  Work has been crazy as the kids are itching for winter break (and, so are the teachers and staff!).  My grandmother came over to stay because she had an appointment with a specialist, and I know that my mind keeps drifting to her and her health.  I just feel that this is only the beginning of a very long journey.  On top of all that, I think my son was so kind to share his head cold with me!

At the time that I write this, I have four days left of work before a two week break.  I am so looking forward to this!!  I feel like I hit the ground running when I started my new job back in August, then moving in September, and the start of renovations around the house.  My house is still covered in boxes, and they are driving me crazy.  I am looking forward to a long break to get a good chunk of these boxes unpacked, some painting done, and a whole lot of reading and relaxing in.  I really want to try to meet my Goodreads goal of 80 books for the year, and I am currently at 71.

In the short-term, I am hoping to get my holiday newsletters finished and mailed, a couple of packages shipped, and the rest of my Christmas shopping done.  Even shorter term, I am going to take my tired body to the bath with a book, and then to bed.  I need some sleep before I tackle this list and the last four days of work!

Have you found yourself in the holiday spirit yet?  Or, do you find yourself struggling like me?  What are some of the things that you are most looking forward to during the holidays this year?

  1. Holidays are rather rough for me so I haven't been in the Christmas spirite in years. I also work at a hotel so I generally have to work on the Holidays. Christmas tends to make people stress out and they generally show it to customer service people like me when they don't get their way. I just look forward to it being over honestly. Yes, I'm a greninch,

    1. Johannah ... I used to work in retail, so I can completely understand your feelings about customer service. People can be so mean! :(

  2. At least you have snow. No snow here in northcentral Pennsylvania yet. As much as I'm not a fan of snow, even after living in Pennsylvania for all my life, I still want to see it on Christmas. Otherwise, it really doesn't seem like Christmas to me. So yeah, I'm struggling here to get into the holiday spirit, plus with a coworker unexpectedly dying at the end of last month, that's not helping either. Trying to watch comedies, though, and not get too down.

    1. Bryan G. Robinson ... I hope you get at least a little bit of snow for Christmas. It really doesn't seem as festive without it. I am really sorry about your coworker. That is never easy, and it can be more difficult around the holidays. Hugs to you.

  4. It really doesn't much feel like Christmas around here. I just started listening to the music, and I've been picking Christmas books to read with the little man, but it kind of feels like we're faking it. I'm thinking it won't really feel like Christmas until we get back to our family next week.

We didn't put up any decorations here, so when we're at home, there's just nothing that says Christmas. Plus the weather has been SO mild. We got one big dump of snow just before Thanksgiving, and then the temps went back up (60 this past weekend!) and it's been nothing but rain since.

    1. Charleen Lynette ... The weather has been really mild here too, until a couple of days ago. Finally we have snow, and that seems to be helping. Either way, I hope you have a great Christmas, especially considering this is the first one with the little man!! :)
