Insurgent by Veronica Roth

I had to know what would happen to Tris and Four after reading Divergent.  I had to know what would happen to the factions.  I had to know everything, so I caved and bought myself the rest of the series.

Divergent impressed and intrigued me.  I liked the characters of Tris and Four, and the concept of the factions made me curious.  Insurgent helped to alleviate some of this curiosity.  I got to learn more about the factions and the factionless.  And, both Tris and Four continue to grow into their characters and their roles.

Divergent was a book that I could not finish fast enough.  I devoured it over just a couple of days.  However, Insurgent did not cause this devouring hunger.  I took my time with it and I believe it was for a couple of reasons (beyond a busy schedule) ... (1) Tris began to get on my nerves.  I understand that she had experienced a lot of bad stuff, but something was off to me.  I just could not connect with her as I did in Divergent.  (2) We spent a lot of time with the Dauntless adrenaline junkies in Divergent.  In Insurgent, the faction is divided and we get to see the lives of the other slower-paced factions.  I think the lack of constant action simply slowed down my own reading.  Don't get me wrong ... there is still action, but it is different.

Overall, I enjoyed Insurgent, BUT it just does not compare to its predecessor.  I do desire to read more, however, and I am immediately picking up the finale.  After the bombshell of the ending, I HAVE to know how the story of Tris and Four ends.

Have you read Insurgent?  What are your thoughts of this middle installment in the series?

  1. That was QUITE the ending, wasn't it?

I definitely agree with you about how Insurgent was a lot slower paced than Divergent was... I think this was definitely part of the reason it took me personally longer to read it.

    1. Court ... Divergent was just an adrenaline rush, but that's Dauntless for you, right?!? :)

  2. I actually liked Insurgent more than Divergent haha. I actually stopped and had to force myself to keep reading. A lot of the things I had problems with in the first book started to make more sense in the second. Reading Allegiant now, and it's getting even better :)

    1. Toni ... I have my review of Allegiant coming next week, so I will be curious to hear what you think about that one when you are done. I won't say more until you are done! I am curious though ... what problems did you have with Divergent that make more sense with Insurgent? I would love to know more!

  3. My thoughts were pretty much exactly like yours. The ending was WOW. But everything else was, okay.

    1. Suey ... Yes! I have finished the whole trilogy now and my review of Allegiant is coming next week. I will be curious to hear if we have the same feeling about the trilogy in general.

  4. I didn't love Divergent, but I was unimpressed with Insurgent to the extent that I haven't bothered picking up the final book in the series. It is okay! I'm sure another YA dystopia series will come along pretty soon for me to love.

(I did use the internet to find out how the series ends though. I cared at least that much about it.)

    1. Jenny @ Reading the End ... I really do think that Insurgent was weaker than Divergent and I slowly lost interest as I read further. I have my review of Allegiant coming next week, so I won't say more here. But, I will agree that there will be another dystopian coming our way and I do love me some dystopian!! :)

  6. I also didn't enjoy ‘Insurgent’ as much as I enjoyed ‘Divergent’. I was really looking forward to reading ‘Insurgent’ but for me it was a little disappointing. Like you said, I didn't feel connected to Tris most in this book. Sometimes I even disliked her a little. Still I pre-ordered ‘Allegiant’ because I really wanted to know how this series would end.
Because even though ‘Insurgent’ wasn’t what I expected I really enjoyed the world Veronica Roth created. And I loved Tobias!!

    1. Maureen Beatrice ... Roth's world really does fascinate me! It really has made me think about what characteristics we value. And, Tobias was a FABULOUS character. As my interest in Tris declined, my interest in Tobias increased!!!
