Allegiant by Veronica Roth

Allegiant is the final installment in Veronica Roth's trilogy that started with Divergent and was followed by Insurgent.  We finally get to find out the fate of Tris and Four.  We finally get to find out the whole truth behind the factions.  We finally get to have some closure.

I have no intention of sharing details of Allegiant for fear of spoiling everything for those that have not yet read any portion of the trilogy.  Instead, I will just share a few of my general thoughts . . .

(1) Allegiant switches things up by alternating between narrators (i.e., Tris and Four).  I found this to be confusing, and oftentimes, had to flip back to the beginning of the chapter to remind myself who's head I was in.

(2)  I found the ending to be predictable.  I don't really have a strong opinion in the positive or negative about this ending.

(3)  I found myself taking forever to get through this book.  I could not read Divergent fast enough, but my interest waned as I progressed through the trilogy.

As a quick conclusion, Allegiant was simply okay for me.  I think I began losing my connection with Tris in Insurgent, but it only got worse in this final book.  I enjoyed the mystery of Four, but the enigma of his character faded with the change in narration.  I turned the final page and only felt meh.  I guess I just wanted more.

Were you satisfied by the ending of this trilogy?  Or, were you desiring more like myself?

  1. I didn't like the dual narrator thing either. It would have been strange regardless, to suddenly introduce that in the final book... but there was practically no difference in their voices! Just one of several issues I had. It's a shame, because the series had such promise. I loved the concept. But the execution was lacking.

    1. Charleen Lynette ... Yes!!! I was really excited about this series with how the first one went. I was so disappointed in how it progressed and ended (and it was not necessarily because of the ending).

  2. Wow, very interesting about the dual narrator. I loved Divergent, but Insurgent was so disappointing. I saw the movie this week and was thinking about reading Allegiant, but it sounds like the series is going to be a let down.

    1. honeyimreading ... I would recommend Allegiant simply because of the information you find out about the factions and Tris' family. Just don't go in with very high expectations.

  3. I was really disappointed when I read 'Allegiant'. 'Divergent' was one of my favorite books and I had high hopes for 'Allegiant'. Just like you I lost the connection with Tris. I didn't really feel connected with her anymore. I almost felt obligated to read 'Allegiant' because I loved 'Divergent' so much but this book really didn't work for me. Sad really!

    1. Maureen Beatrice ... Very sad! Divergent was such a page-turner and I really loved the concept. I wish that it continued beyond that book.

  4. I don't mind multiple narrators, but that really is confusing to just throw that in on the last book! How weird! I will probably be confused when I read it, too, since I am used to just Tris.

My interest waned with Insurgent but it got perked up at the very end of it so I was hoping that Allegiant would speed back up. Often times it seems the 2nd book in a trilogy is filler and build up for the conclusion. But I am disappointed that isn't the case.

    1. Becca Lostinbooks ... I don't mind multiple narrators too, but it was how it was done and the change only in the final book that bothered me. So disappointed with this one because it had sooooo much awesome potential.

  5. I'm usually okay with the flipping back and forth of POVs but it was so so strange to me that Tris and Four felt like the same person in this book! I just saw Divergent again (as you may remember) and it made me think, yet again, that the edge that Four had which made him intriguing at first was lost as this series went on. Sad!

    1. Suey ... They really did seem like the same person and was the very reason I had to keep flipping back to figure out who I was reading! Four is really a fabulous character (better than Tris IMO and not just because of the swooniness!). I liked the mystery around him and I wished it had stayed that way.

  6. Sad to hear that the series doesn't live up to the first book. Haven't read these yet, but thinking about just seeing the movies instead. Thanks for your honest review!

    1. Alexia561 ... You're welcome! I just saw the first movie this week. I enjoyed it. Maybe the movies will be changed from the books?!? It's been known to happen!
