The Wednesday Sisters by Meg Waite Clayton

It is the late 1960's and five women meet in the park:  Frankie, Kath, Linda, Ally, and Brett.  As their children play, these women bond - first over their children and husband's careers, then over their own hopes, dreams, and struggles.  They fight personal battles, from cancer and adultery to even finding their own identity as women and stay-at-home moms.  Their tactics are far from mainstream, but they make discoveries and learn lessons side by side.

The Wednesday Sisters will break your heart and then refill it with love.  Love that is genuine and pure.  Love that has been worked for and earned, yet given unconditionally.  Clayton brings us a story that is more than just the power of women.  She brings us the story of friendship and how it can bring light to the darkness.  She brings us the power of the written word and how it can help us to relate to the world.  And, she brings us the story of America - the struggles our country has had to face - racism, sexism, and class-ism to name a few.

When I opened the book for a quick book club read, I was honestly expecting fluff.  What I got was a complicated read that I found myself savoring.  These women will be staying with me for quite some time.

Have you stepped into the lives of The Wednesday Sisters?  What did you find yourself taking away from this novel?

I kind of forgot about this story, but now I am thinking of adding it to my reread pile for this year.
