Monday Maunder: Let's Talk Sherlock!

It's Monday and it's late, and if I don't get this posted soon, it will no longer be Monday.  Today has been filled with lots of different errands and activities and swimming lessons and emails and cleaning and laundry.  Somehow, this busy day is okay because last night, there was SHERLOCK!!!

I have been highly anticipating the Season 3 Premier of BBC's SHERLOCK.  This is one that even my husband was excited for, and he doesn't really get excited about anything TV.  And, last night was THE night!!  We settled down on the couch to watch, me complete with a cup of hot cocoa, barely blinking during the opening scenes.  Then, out of nowhere, our stinky cable company decided to delete that channel after only minutes into the premiere.  At first, my husband and I sat in shocked silence, but it then turned into panic and not-so-nice language.  We quickly clicked through our channels in the hope of finding the channel somewhere else.  My heart began beating way too fast; I felt the symptoms of hyperventilating coming on.  And, we found the channel!!  The picture was not as good as it was previously, but we could still watch our beloved show.  Life was good again!

After the drama of the missing channel, we relaxed and thoroughly enjoyed the show.  I loved that they showed us a number of the thirteen ways that Sherlock figured out how to fake his death.  I loved that we finally got to meet Mary, the (other) love of Dr. John Watson.  I loved the quirks that they inserted into the serious story line and the hints towards other short stories of Doyle's work.  I am still left wondering about which way Sherlock really escaped.  I am still left laughing at the comments about Watson's mustache and the questions about the relationship between Sherlock/Watson and Sherlock/Moriarty.  Though I don't think that it was the best of the series thus far, I do still adore the chemistry between Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.  And, I appreciate the series even more after finally reading a portion of Doyle's works of Sherlock - how the series stays true to the classic.

Hands down, SHERLOCK is by far my favorite adaptation thus far, and my favorite television show right now!

Oh, and for those curious about my reading . . . I am still reading the same book I was reading this time last week -- From A Buick 8 by Stephen King.  Reading was very light, but I'm hoping for better this week.

Are you a fan of SHERLOCK?  What did you think of the premiere?  And, if you are not a fan of my favorite show, how about you tell me about your reading instead?!?

  1. Oh man! I would have died had our channel suddenly cut out just as the show started. So glad you found a different place to watch it.

Yes, we loved it too, all the things you mention. I haven't managed to get my husband interested (and yet he IS addicted to TV!) but my kids ages almost 19 and almost 15 were totally into it with me. We giggled through much of it and oohed and aahed through the rest. I love how we are left hanging on what REALLY happened. I love that there's something.. not quite sure what... going on between Sherlock and Molly. I'm so rooting for that to happen. Before I thought he was just teasing her, but I think now he might really feel something. I love it.

And the chemistry between these two characters/actors... it's amazing. They are brilliant. So much fun to watch.

I could gush and gush, but I'll stop for now!

As for what I'm reading... Allegiant. Not sure what to think yet. I'm not that into this series, so... I don't know.

    1. Suey ... I completely forgot to mention the relationship between Molly and Sherlock!! I loved when her fiance came in and he looked so much like Sherlock. The looks and the (lack of) comments had me giggling! How could I forget this?!? This is one series I could own and watch over and over and over again. Someday, I will own them all!

I have yet to read Divergent, but I should get to it in the next month. I'm curious to see what I think of this series ... like I need another series!!

  2. I've not seen it, but it's on my (long) list of shows to watch at some point. Since it's pretty closely based on the stories, I'm torn whether I should read them first. I've no doubt I'll enjoy the show either way, I'm more wondering whether watching would make it more or less likely that I'd enjoy the books.

    1. Charleen @ Cheap Thrills ... I think you are fine either way! Though I will say that I picked up on a few things during this recent episode that I would not have picked up on if I had not read The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. It wasn't a necessary detail, but rather a fun little cameo.

  3. BBC have also done a mini prequel episode of about 10 mins - have a look on youtube to see if it's available in your area.

Episode 2 is the weakest in the 3 and caused much yawning on twitter when it came out here. Epi 3 is better (apparently) though I didnt see it, having been bored by Ep 2

  4. dont wait to read em,just watch the series. The presentation is interesting (some would call it "post modern"), and makes use of such things as twitter, mobiles, texts, blogs, social media, etc which were never imagined in the books.

The basics remain the same:John Watson is a doctor (recent of the army); Sherlock has an older, more clever brother in Mycroft (who still works in mysterious unknown ways in the security services and government); Sherlock still plays the violin and there is the occasional hint he's been dabbling in something stronger than coffee....

  5. Oh, did you spot the people playing Sherlock's parents? They're Benny Cumberbatch's real parents, who are also actors. You can see where he gets his height from...

    1. nordie ... I am definitely going to look for the mini prequel! I had heard about it, but haven't seen it yet.

I did spot his parents, but I had no idea that they were Cumberbatch's real parents! That's a fun little fact!!

  6. I can't believe that I haven't watched this series yet, as I see so many rave reviews for it! I think that part of it may be because I'm now hooked on Elementary, and maybe one Sherlock is all I can handle?

I would have totally panicked if the show cut off right at the beginning! Thank goodness you were able to find it on another station!

    1. Alexia561 ... I honestly have stopped watching Elementary. I should get back into it. In my personal opinion, Sherlock is the best adaptation I've seen so far!
