Readers Imbibing Peril (RIP) VIII

As I mentioned earlier this year, I had no intention of signing up for reading challenges this year. However, I did mention that I would likely be making an exception for one challenge. That one challenge is Readers Imbibing Peril (RIP) VIII and it is that time of year to be in peril! (Of course, I also did make another exception to this rule for the Sherlock Holmes Reading Challenge.)

Here is a bit of information from Carl from Stainless Steel Droppings on the challenge . . .
Mystery.
Suspense.
Thriller.
Dark Fantasy.
Gothic.
Horror.
Supernatural.
Or anything sufficiently moody that shares a kinship with the above. That is what embodies the stories, written and visual, that we celebrate with the R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril event.
As time has wound on I’ve honed this event down to two simple rules:
1. Have fun reading (and watching).
2. Share that fun with others.

This year, I hope to have the most successful year yet for this challenge. I have only ever participated one time before officially, but tend to read all things perilous during this time of year anyway. Here’s what I’m looking at . . .

This picture is just a peek at the stack of books I will be grabbing from in the next couple of months. A couple of notes about a few of these titles . . .

  • The Shining is obviously being read for The Shining Readalong (#shinealong) that Charleen and I are hosting! This is my first read of the challenge and I dove into it yesterday!
  • The Historian is being read as a read-along for the RIP VIII event and hosted by Estella Society. I have had this book on my shelf for ages and I would love to finally crack that cover and read it with others.
  • I have been really wanting to read more books from Joe Hill, so I hope to make that a priority this year.  And, I also hope to get at least one of the classics in (Jane Eyre or The Picture of Dorian Gray).

I also reserve the right to read books not pictured above. Here are a few that are on my list . . .
  • Doctor Sleep for the upcoming readalong that Charleen and I just announced yesterday! (More information coming soon!)
  • Tuesday Book Talk plans to read Joyland by Stephen King in October, so I will see what I can do about getting my hands on a copy of this one.
  • The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson is another classic I was hoping to add to my list. I have a copy in one of my boxes of TBR books. If I find it, then I will try to get to this one as well.
  • I may also try to throw in an audiobook, but that will depend on what is available and the timing of my current listen.

Now, I know that this is a ridiculous amount of books! It is very likely that I will not get to all of them. However, I am sure going to try! Afterall, I am shooting for Peril the First, which is reading a minimum of four books.  My reading has picked up, and as I mentioned in my weekly post yesterday, I have become polygamous in my reading. This may or may not translate to more books finished. I guess we will see!

Last, but not least, I also hope to participate in Peril on the Screen. I do not intend to commit to any specific numbers here and may or
  • The Shining (1980 edition starring Jack Nicholson)
  • The Shining (1997 edition made-for-TV)
  • The Lost Boys (a favorite from my childhood!)
  • Shaun of the Dead (because I hear that I’m missing out)
I used to watch a LOT of horror and suspense films, but this has declined in recent years because of my limited time. In fact, I taught a class once at a university on the evolution of horror films. If you have any recommendations on other films that are a must-see, let me know!

Now, I’m off to read in peril, particularly in the mountains of Colorado at the Overlook Hotel!

Will you be reading in peril? What book/movie are you most excited for? (Please feel free to leave links to your own announcement posts!)

  1. Shaun of the Dead is a winner, you can't go wrong with Simon Pegg. I like the original The Shining too with Jack Nicholson, but it's almost too creepy. I recommend the original Scream movie because it's a great parody and maybe the original Carrie movie to go with your Stephen King books. Have fun!

    1. ebookclassics ... I have seen Scream and Carrie before, but I may have to rewatch Carrie. Sissy Spacek did an amazing job in that movie! I will have to see if my library carries either of the movies! Thanks!

  2. I'm so excited about this event, too! I finished my first book for the challenge, The Other Typist. Right now I'm reading through Jane Eyre, and of course I'll be tackling The Historian and others. So much fun!

    1. Andi ... You have already finished a book?!? Awesome job!! My reading polygamy is not serving me well these days and it's taking me longer to get through books!! Hoping to start The Historian soon though!

  3. I'd love to join something like this, but I can't add more to my schedule. Maybe after Julianne's first draft. ;) That said, I am listening to a book that falls into this category, "Stoker's Manuscript" by Royce Prouty. Sort of reminds me of "The Historian" but with Dan Brown's Robert Langston having the lead role. Maybe I'll change my opinion later. I'm still early in the book. Oh, and this is an OverDrive book, so maybe your library has it as well.

  4. Of course, I'm signed up for this one. You know me and the scary! I'm also reading along with The Historian (it's a reread, actually). I loved that book and have been wanting to reread it.

This challenge always fits in nicely with my FrightFall read-a-thon. =O) I hope you're planning on joining me.

    1. Michelle Miller ... Yeah!! Glad you are joining in (and no, I'm not surprised)!! What are the dates of FrightFall again? I thought I had it written down in my planner, but it's not there! :(

  5. You haven't seen Shaun of the Dead?! It's really more funny than scary but it's so, so good and actually surprisingly deep in parts. Gosh, I've seen it dozens of times. You should watch Hot Fuzz too while you're at it. Totally along the same lines but with creepy, murdery townspeople instead of zombies.

    1. Kristen M. ... I know I'm crazy, right?!? I'm not sure how I ever missed it, but I really hope to fix that over the next couple of months. I will add Hot Fuzz to the list too. My husband raves about that movie, but I have never seen it either!

  6. I think I know several people (including me!) who participate in Carl's challenges even when they're trying to limit their challenges for the year...but these are so laid-back and so much fun!
