The Game by Diana Wynne Jones

I was first introduced to Diana Wynne Jones via Dogsbody thanks to Kristen at We Be Reading.  Once again, I return to the adventures of this author's mind via DWJ in March.  Unfortunately, my library did not have many DWJ books in stock, but I did come across one that piqued by interest:  The Game.

The Game introduces us to Hayley, a young girl who lives with her grandparents after her parents mysteriously disappear.  Grandma is excruciatingly strict, never letting her play with other kids her age, while Grandpa frequently travels or works in his office when home.  When Hayley unknowingly does something wrong, she is immediately shipped off to her aunts' house.  She quickly discovers her family is much larger than she ever imagined and her family has a secret that she quickly learns through "the game."

The Game is a quick read with a great mix of fantasy and mythology.  Walking through the worlds with Hayley and her family was an adventure that I thoroughly enjoyed.  I only wished it did not have to end so quickly.  I think the only way to solve this problem is to find another DWJ to dive into soon!

What do you recommend for my next DWJ read?  Which is your personal favorite?

  1. I feel so bad that I have never read anything by DWJ. I feel the pressure to change that. ;)

  2. I love all of her books, the Chrestomanci series is a good one. Dark Lord of Derkholm if you're a gamer/fantasy fan. If you're a mythology fan: Eight Days of Luke.

    2. I have been trying to get my hands on the Chrestomanci series, but have had no luck so far! I am also really interested in Eight Days of Luke. Hopefully, an upcoming book fair will provide me with these treasures!!

  3. I have to say that the Chrestomanci are my favorite (because they are the first books by DWJ that I discovered and they are awesome stories) but I love Howl's Moving Castle and the other two books in that series as well.

I can't wait to see what you read next!

    1. I thought I might get lucky at my local book sales this weekend and find some little treasures to help in my decision. I did find one of the books in the Chrestomanci series, but not the first one! Guess I better just request that one from the library!!

  4. I'm starting to feel like a way to try my hand at writing (just to see if I could do it) is to expand a book I love but see more potential in -- like this one! I wanted it to be at least twice as long. I think my next DWJ read will be The Ogre Downstairs if I can find a copy. I might need to buy one from the UK.

    1. I definitely could have gotten lost in this one much longer as well! I loved the world jumping and the mythology connections! I'd be curious if your version would have the same ending!! :)
