Eat Cake by Jeanne Ray

When I first started this book, I thought to myself . . . "I'm going to end up snacking every time I sit down to read this thing." With all this talk of cake, all I wanted was cake myself!! However, once I got into the story, my cravings got much better and I could sit down to read without my mouth watering (well, not too much!).

This cute little book is about a family that just keeps expanding and their income just keeps getting smaller. Ruth, the cake lover and extraordinaire, has her life completely uprooted in a very short period of time. Her husband loses his job and her father gets so injured that he has to move in with them. All this on top of already having her mother live with them due to an incident where she used to call home and having two teenage kids! Yikes! In order to cope with the stress, she imagines herself on the inside of a cake. She bakes an amazing cake just about everyday. And, though her family does not appreciate this stress reliever, the new visitors definitely do!

This book is such a quick, easy read that I can't help but recommend it! I love the analogies that it gives throughout the book, about dealing with stress in an already stressed environment, the challenges the family experiences, and the risks they take to survive as a family. I love that Ruth is a character that many can relate to . . . a pretty ordinary woman that actually has a pretty extraordinary talent. Afteralll, most women have at least one amazing talent that is usually kept hidden -- at least, that is what I have come to discover over the years! And, for those domestic goddesses out there, there are some seriously mouth-watering cake recipes at the end of this book. Yummy!

  2. I loved this book. It was written in such fun, light-hearted way. Since I liked it so much, I just read another book by the same author. Step-Ball-Change. It had the same type of storyline and was very good also. Not as good as Eat Cake, but a quick, fun, read.
