Where the Heart Is by Billie Letts

I read this book quite a few years ago. In fact, it was my first Oprah book introduced to me by a friend. I had never read a book that Oprah had recommended and was worried that it would not be for me. Boy was I wrong!!! Many Oprah picks later, here I am -- much more well read and thankful for her many amazing recommendations!

Anyways, about this book -- after reading the description, I thought that it was going to be a cheesy book. Afterall, it is about a young girl who ends up living in Walmart and giving birth within the store. Seriously, Walmart?!? Well, that is only a portion of this story. There is so much more to it than that -- about a community coming together, about complete strangers willing to accept and take in an outsider, about what is truly important in life -- family (not necessarily family of blood-relation, however!). Though I thought it was going to be a silly waste of my time to read this book, it ended up being one of the sweetest books I have ever read. If anyone is looking for a quick read that will warm your heart, this is definitely the one.

  2. I never read the book, but I rented the movie to watch while I was in bed after having my wisdom teeth out. I was in kind of bad shape and felt miserable when I watched it and to this day I still get a little panicky when I think of that movie. Maybe I should try the book and get the bad taste out of my mouth - no pun intended.

  5. Hi Tif,

I loved this book, too. If you'd like another Southern fiction book to add to your "To Read" list, I recommend Vera Jane Cook's "Dancing Backward in Paradise." It's set in the 60's in the South and NY and has great characters who I still wonder about today, months after finishing the book. I consider it a story you don't want to miss.

    Cheers,
    Linda
